they had now gone so far that it was impossible for them to

retreat unless they received a guarantee that they

should not be punished for their actions. They demanded

the expulsion of the Bishop, and that immediate effect

should be given to the new rate of exchange by which

the dollar would be exchanged at 450 instead of 540 reis.

During the discussion which lasted for some time the crowd

outside became impatient and burst into the house where

the leaders were met on the stairs by Madene Marques and

After this event Senhor Marques again tendered his

resignation which was accepted and the Chief Justice Dr.

Vidal was appointed Acting Governor. Senhor Marques left

Macao for Hongkong, and on his arrival here I sent my

Aide-de-Camp to express my sympathy and invite him and
